The Modern Thor by XM Studios was sculpted by Thiago Almeida and Alan Sales and released in 2021, with an edition
size of 499 samples worldwide. The statue is massive, imposing and very heavy: it depicts a dramatic clash with the Destroyer,
when the God of Thunder is about to deliver the final blow on the archenemy, lying lifeless at his feet. The piece
offers an amazing visual impact, both for the extreme dynamism of the scene and for the general sculpt, made with a
great skill and a remarkable wealth of details. The costume of the Modern version of the character is very faithful
to Comics: a tight-fitting black suit is present on the bust, embellished with the typical silver buttons and some
golden strips, and ends below the waist in a soft "kilt"; the same matte black colors the long boots and the wide
knee pads, which different leather strips and two circular rigid plates (protecting the malleoli under the ankles)
are placed on. Both legs and arms are covered with a wonderful metal mail, consisting of small rhomboidal scales,
sculpted in relief.
The hero's physique is nothing short of sculptural and is pointed out by the pose: the huge ribcage, with well defined
abs and back, is in full extension with arms bent back and both hands wielding the mighty Mjolnir, ready to
strike. The legs are also bent and highlight the power of the quadriceps with the muscular contours shining through the metal
mail. Thor's face, with blue eyes pointed towards the enemy and the gaping mouth, fully expresses the fury of the battle!
The helmet shows the classic side wings, carved with great care, and a slightly arched shape on the nose, with the edge
enriched by a golden frieze.
Destroyer is sculpted in a masterful way too: the typical silver armor, with pyramidal spikes along the shoulders and arms,
shows signs of the blows inflicted by the opponent everywhere. The head (characterized by disquieting red eyes) is
tilted to one side, the forearm and left hand lie on the rock base, severed from the rest of the body, while the right arm
is raised with half-open hand, as to attempt a last, desperate defense.
Note the wonderful details of this piece, aimed at emphasizing the crueness of the clash (the tears of the metal
mail of the hero, the numerous dents on the Destroyer's armor, the cuts on the cloak and the rocks that literally "fly"
around it) or, simply, to enrich the aesthetic impact of the whole (the splendid belt at the waist of the God of Thunder,
the golden edges of the black costume, the laces on the back of the boots, the traces of mud on the hero's shoes).
It is interesting to note that statues devoted to Marvel characters (both in static and dynamic poses) usually do not offer
any representation of clashes, a task generally carried out by dioramas. In this case, however, XM Studios was able to realize
a beautiful statue of the Modern Thor and, at the same time, an impressive scene which really seems to come out from a Comics!
